Just had a very interesting conversation with Rajagopal over coffee at Sitwells.
How do you learn to appreciate some art form?
His idea was that, if you keep seeing/hearing an art form, you will eventually like it.
Drilling down, He supported this view with my liking for certain ragas.
I started liking Hamir Kalyani and Desh only after forcing myself to listen to it for an extended period of time.
But then now, i love these two ragas.
So by his logic, if i listen to thodi for long enough, i would learn to appreciate the raga.
Point well made. And i will start listening to thodi.
Yes yes, this is an extremely naive discussion on something complex.
But, this does beg the question. Would everyone, given time and effort, start appreciating every art form?
